The recreation limit and size on scallops varies depending on your location, please check you local regulations to confirm legal limits and

season.
Scallops are found on sandy bottoms. They will move to find better feeding grounds throughout the year. When looking for scallops you will see a slight shape in the sand, which looks like a half circle. When you do find scallops they are usually found with others close by. To collect the scallop you need to measure it before removing from the water. The scallop can be hand picked from the sea bed.

MUSSELSNewzealand_mussel01.jpg

When collecting mussels it is best to collect them below the low tide mark, this will ensure your mussel is covered by seawater on all tides.
The most desirable mussel is the green lip, the green lip mussel has a green colour to the shell, in some cases the lip only has the green on it.
Bag limits depend on the area you live in, it is best to contact your local MAF office to get the current regulations on bag limits.

PAUA (Abalone) Black footpaua_new_zealand.jpg

Paua are found on the rocky shoreline in depths from 1-10m, they prefer the cooler climates of the south island. It is important that you measure your paua before removing it from the rocks as any damage to the soft underside of the paua generally cause the paua to die.
You are allowed to catch 10 per person

The legal size for a black foot paua is 125cm
When shucking your paua (removing the shell) it should never be discarded in the area where you found the paua.It should be carried away from the diving area as other paua in the area will move if they can detect dead paua.

PAUA (Yellow Foot)

The yellow foot paua is the smaller of the two species, they are found in depths from 1-10m and on most coastal areas. The Yellow foot has a distinct yellow-Orange coloured foot.
The legal size for a yellow foot paua is 80mm
