We also offer breath-hold courses, wetsuit repairs, alterations, and gear servicing. Being keen spearos and divers ourselves, we’re here to help you with any queries. We’re happy to share our knowledge and experience with you.

For the love of spearfishing - Our story

Ocean Hunter was founded in 2007 in Auckland by Mike Smith. Born from the desire to make quality spearfishing equipment and knowledge more readily available to the public, Ocean Hunter set out to provide the best dive gear and freediving courses to people all over New Zealand.

The first shop was opened in the Auckland CBD. Only a few years later, the online shop was set up, allowing people from all areas of the country to get spearfishing gear by courier. To this day, online orders are being dispatched from our Auckland headquarters.

Due to growing demand for our equipment and services, Ocean Hunter shops were opened in Wellington 2017 and Whangarei in 2022. The Auckland shop relocated to Albany in 2019, after the business had outgrown the premises in the CBD.

2021 marked the move to a business model which allows brand partners to run their own, independent Ocean Hunter stores. This is how we came to collaborate with Marine and Outdoors, who is now the home of Ocean Hunter in Blenheim.
