Back in early 2017, local spearo Hugh and Ocean Hunter founder Mike came up with the idea to open an Ocean Hunter store in Wellington.

Six months later, we opened the doors with the goal to provide Wellington with top quality spearfishing and freediving gear, along with expert advice and service. In 2021, Dan came on board as a co-owner.

Meet the team

Hugh founded Ocean Hunter Wellington in 2017. He started spearfishing in 2010, and quickly became addicted exploring the coastline around Wellington and further afield.

He has a passion for chasing cunning species in the pacific islands, as well his Wellington favourite - Blue Warehou, for which he holds the current NZ and World record.

Dan will be a familiar face to many. Having joined us close to day one, he has been an integral part of our team in Wellington.

He loves diving around Wellington's South Coast, and is our handy/technical man. We are stoked Dan came on as a part owner in 2021.

Josh will also be a familiar face to many, working for us for a few years and getting out spearing some epic fish around Wellington as often as he can. He has a passion for competing here and around the country, even representing NZ in Australia for the Interpacifics in 2019, as a development reserve at only 17!

Laura started with us in October 2021 whilst completing her PADI Specialist Scuba instructor course. She has extensive experience locally, as well as diving around the Mediterranean and in her homeland, France. Laura has since seen the light, and ditched the bottles for chasing big butterfish around Wellington, even spearing some good Snapper while working at our Whangarei store.

Ollie started with us in October 2021 after being a regular customer for a number of years. His passion for the water started as a kid, looking for paua on the Waiarapa coastline and in 2018, started spearfishing around Wellington.

When he's not studying or in the shop, he loves chasing kingfish on the west coast.

Brocc is the lazy but charismatic one of the shop. Loves to sneak off and sleep under the boss' desk, and also enjoys to keep your better half occupied while we sort you out with your gear.
